Grade 1 is the way to go with exterior doors, but don’t forget to upgrade your strike plate’s strength too. I picked this based on many reviews by locksmiths and Consumer Reports. I want a Grade 1 lock on all my doors and this one is nice and sleek and took all of 5 minutes to install.It doesn’t matter how good your deadbolt is if your strike plate is weak – you can rip the entire door jamb/frame off with a swift kick. I intend to get a full-length strike plate (3 – 4 feet) and use 3″ screws that will hold it in place because it’s screwed into a stud at multiple points, not just a…

Great, BUT if your deadbolt knob won’t turn…. In the installation instructions, it cryptically states “do not use keys”, as if without context that is supposed to make sense. (dont use ever? during that step? during entire installation?) So after much cursing I finally figured out what was meant.The flat bar piece that goes through the deadbolt piece and is actuated on the other side with the knob needs to not move from its general position.
